Our story so far...

So the backstory. The year is 1713, and the political situation in England...wait a minute. I wrote some flyleaf notes a while ago. Where did I leave that pesky flyleaf?
ENGLAND in 1713 stands on the brink of civil war as Queen Anne nears death without an heir.

THE MONKS of the Chinese Dao Jhi order practiced levitation as a spiritual exercise. Now exiled to England, they practice their art for a fleet of avian merchant sailing ships.

THE CAPTAIN of the flying ship Pearl is a fierce and formidable woman caught between the demands of honor, love, and the quest for enlightenment. Now she is caught as well between rival claimants to the throne.

THE WEATHERMASTER, watching his world and his beloved Captain torn apart around him, chronicles it all in...

THE WEATHERMASTER'S TALE A tense, fast-paced, and multi-layered story of passion, courage, and hope.
So Hu Tien started out as just a foil. She was a lens that let us see the Captain and several other major characters from a different angle. She saw people's weaknesses, and she commented on them. Once, she flirted briefly with the eponymous weathermaster, Sean MacPhereson. And that was about it.

But by the end of--What is it now? About draft # 578--Sean was at least a little bit in love with her, and she was about to pull the trigger to fire the decisive shot at the crucial point in the climactic battle scene in that last rising-action chapter before the denouement. And still, all Sean and the reader really know about her is that she's pretty, and smart, and mysterious. That's not enough.
